Grouse
Grouse is a family of birds, the only one in the order of grouse. These include 16 species that are common in the arid steppes and semi-deserts of Eurasia and Africa. Members of this family are very similar in appearance and behavior. Are the object of the hunt.
1. Phylogenetic origin
The phylogenetic origin and taxonomic position of grouse have long remained controversial. Sometimes, according to a number of common characteristics, they were assigned to the orders of chickens, dove-like, charadriiformes, or stork-like. However, sand grouses are so different, for example, from chickens, that they began to stand out as an independent detachment, which constitutes a kind of transition between chickens and pigeons.
2. Appearance and lifestyle
Grouse are medium sized birds that range from the size of a partridge to the size of a dove. The body length is 23 - 40 cm, and the weight is from 150 to 400 g.
In general appearance they resemble pigeons, with a small head and a short beak, the nostrils of which are not covered with fleshy swellings, with weak, low, short-toed legs, with a highly attached rudimentary or completely absent hind toe, with sharp, long wings adapted for fast flight, and long wedge-shaped tail. Not only the torso is feathered, but also the lower legs, and even the toes of ordinary sajs. Thick plumage and thick skin are protection from overheating, and in saji - from frost.
All sand grouses fly well, but run badly. They keep in flocks in open, mostly sandy steppes.
Their brownish-yellow, variegated color with variations from brown to greenish is in perfect harmony with the general background of these steppes. The most common, however, are sand grouse or reddish tones with black lines or brushstrokes. In case of danger, sand grouse nestle on the ground, becoming completely invisible to the eyes of the hunter.
They feed on seeds of grasses and shrubs.
3. Reproduction
For nesting, they are divided into pairs. The nests are simple grooves in the soil.
The clutch consists of 3 - 4 yellow-gray eggs covered with dark specks, which, like the birds themselves, are already at a short distance completely indistinguishable from the general background of the surrounding soil. Both sexes incubate eggs. Chicks hatch sighted, covered with thick down. Their parents feed them by belching from the goiter, and in waterless places they fly to watering places and bring water to chicks in the goiter or wet feathers of the abdomen.
4. Dissemination
Grouse prefer the steppe and desert regions of southern and southwestern Europe, Asia and North Africa, but are not exclusively tied to them. The Madagascar Sandgrouse lives in the green hilly areas of Madagascar, while the Senegalese Sandgrouse keeps close to water bodies.
5. Classification
Currently, the sand grouse are an independent order and family, which consists of 16 species in two genera:
- Tibetan saja S. tibetanus
- Saji Syrrhaptes
- common saja, hoof S. paradoxus
- volatile sandgrouse P. burchelli
- namak sandgrouse P. namaqua
- black-bellied sandgrouse P. orientalis
- Senegalese Sandgrouse P. exustus
- Madagascar Sandgrouse P. personatus
- grouse P. bicinctus
- black-faced sandgrouse P. decoratus
- Liechtenstein sandgrouse P. lichtensteinii
- crowned sandgrouse P. coronatus
- yellow-throated sandgrouse P. gutturalis
- Sandgrouse P. alchata
- Grouse Pterocles
- four-striped sandgrouse P. quadricinctus
- Indian Sandgrouse P. indicus
- desert sandgrouse P. senegallus
Previously, the family was considered a suborder Pterocletes in the order of pigeon-like birds. At the same time, the Tibetan Saju was singled out as a separate genus, and among the sand grouses, a slightly smaller number of species, 12 instead of 14, were distinguished.
On the territory of the former USSR, there are two species of hazel grouses living in southern Kazakhstan and Central Asia: the white-bellied sandgrouse, which prefers sandy deserts, and the black-bellied sandgrouse, which lives in the rubble foothills. Both of these species are migratory.
6. Genetics
Most of the deposited sequences belong to the yellow-throated grouse P. gutturalis, the genetically most studied representative of the order Grouse.
In 2014, sequencing of the complete genomic sequence of a representative of the order, the yellow-throated grouse P. gutturalis, was performed. Due to the relatively good assembly quality of the P. gutturalis genome, the species is important in comparative genomics for elucidating the evolution of avian genomes.
