A characteristic feature of these fish are 8-12 black and yellow vertical stripes on the body. Sometimes there are orange markings on the head of fish and their tail. The body of the fish resembles a cylinder, which allows it to swim very quickly. The mouth has powerful lips that are well adapted to nibble on algal growths.

The size of the fish is up to 30 cm in length. Most of the time, fish swim head down. This is due to the fact that in their natural habitats, fish swim in coastal areas of water bodies heavily overgrown with plants, in search of food and the easiest way to do this is in an upright position. At the slightest fright, leporinuses instantly take a horizontal position and immediately hide among the plants. Taking into account this behavior of fish, it is necessary to strive to recreate the living conditions in the aquarium close to natural habitat conditions.

The aquarium should be with many shelters in the form of driftwood, stones laid on top of each other, grottoes. Water parameters for keeping leporinus: temperature 22-25 C, hardness dH 10-12, acidity pH 5.5-7.0. Filtration, aeration are required. Due to the fact that fish very poorly tolerate even minor temperature changes, it is advisable to change water no more than once a month, no more than 20% of the total volume of water in the aquarium. If you do not follow these requirements, then when you change the water in the aquarium, with water that has a different temperature, the fish begin to quickly swim around the aquarium, hitting everything that gets in and killed.

As for any other fish, a high concentration of poisons is unacceptable: ammonia, nitrite and nitrate... In this matter, high-quality timely water changes, as well as drugs such as, say Tetra EasyBalance, which converts phosphates into an insoluble precipitate and gradually lowers nitrogenous ones.

In general, every conscientious aquarist should always have a set of drip tests on hand, at least for nitrate and phosphate. Fortunately, they have now become inexpensive, there are no problems with their assortment and purchase. For example, with a clear conscience, we can recommend cool drips that have been tested on ourselves. UHE testsbut they are only sold online. In stores in your city - offline, you can find inexpensive Vladox tests... Watch your friends, for nitrogenous compounds, keep them in check and you and your pets will have everything in a bunch.

Feeding aquarium fish should be correct: balanced, varied. This fundamental rule is the key to the successful keeping of any fish, be it guppies or astronotuses. We recommend feeding the lamprologus with Tetra food.

It should be noted that when buying any dry food, you should pay attention to the date of its manufacture and shelf life, try not to buy food by weight, and also keep the food closed - this will help to avoid the development of pathogenic flora in it.

Reproduction of leporinus. Males are slimmer than females and have more contrasting coloration. Sexual differences are poorly expressed, females are usually larger and fuller.

The striped leporinus reaches its sexual maturity by 2-3 years of life. The largest fish are selected for spawning. Males should be brightly colored and moderately well-fed. Before spawning, two males and one female are seated in different aquariums and abundantly fed for 10 days with a variety of foods. A spawning aquarium should have a volume of at least 500 liters. The water should be soft. Spawning is stimulated by raising the water temperature to 30 ° C. Spawning is achieved by injecting pituitary drugs. Immediately after the injections, which are desirable in the evening, the producers are placed in the spawning aquarium. Manufacturers are starting to chase each other. It is better not to disturb the fish during this time. At one point, the male clings to the female, which immediately spits out about a hundred eggs. All this action lasts about 5 hours. At the end of spawning, it is necessary to completely change the water in the aquarium, because in the process of spawning, the water takes on a milky color due to the secretion of semen by the males. At this time, you need to very carefully control the temperature of the water, preventing even minor drops. The aquarium should have enhanced aeration of the water. Caviar is incubated for 2 days. The emerging larvae are constantly in motion until their yolk sac dissolves. This happens approximately on the fourth day, after which the fry begin to feed. During this period they are fed live dust.
