Mongolian plover - Charadrius mongolus

Larger and lighter than a tie, the head, neck and chest are red, the throat and belly are white, the forehead is white or black with a white spot, from the beak through the eye and sometimes on the throat there is a black stripe, the legs are black.

The beak is short (up to 2 cm). A wing in flight with a white stripe.

Breeds in gravelly high-mountain tundra, on loaches, less often on pebble beaches and sand dunes in Chukotka, Kamchatka, Commander, in the Magadan region and on some ranges of Eastern Siberia. The voice is a loud trill.

Short description

Mongolian plover (Charadrius mongolus) a small sandpiper of dense constitution with a short beak. Weight up to 100 g. The male in breeding plumage has brown back, top of the head and wings. The forehead, throat and abdomen are white. The goiter, chest and sides of the body are rusty-red. There is a black stripe on the sides of the head. The beak is black, the legs are dark olive. The female is similar to the male, but the red color on the chest is paler.

Spread

The range fragmentarily occupies separate mountainous regions of Central, Central and North-East Asia.

In the Amur region, nesting was established on the Stanovoy ridge in the upper reaches of the river. Zeya [1, 2], but there are no modern data on the state of this focus.

Habitats and biology

During the nesting period, the Mongolian plover inhabits dry mountain tundras at an altitude of more than 1,000 m above sea level, and during seasonal migrations it occurs on open sandy-silty and sandy shores and shoals of rivers, lakes and reservoirs.

Spring migrations take place in May and early June, and autumn migrations from August to October. The breeding season is June-July.

The nest is a hole in a layer of lichens or among rubble. There are three eggs in a clutch. The incubation period lasts 24-26 days.

On the lake. Okonon (upper reaches of the Zeya River) on July 31, 1914, three young birds were caught, which are kept in the ornithological collection of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
